This was one exciting weekend for Imani, an 18 year old gorilla who lives at the San Diego Zoo. She gave birth to her first baby on Friday, and it was definitely a very eventful birth!

In the human world, cesarean sections are a relatively common occurrence. In fact, according to Parents Magazine, nearly one in three babies are brought into the world this way. For gorillas, however, c-sections are extremely rare. This didn’t faze the team of veterinarians and animal care specialists, who were also joined by a human anesthesiologist and a neonatal specialist for this procedure after realizing that the baby gorilla was in distress.
The procedure went off without a hitch, and the tiny 4.6 pound female baby gorilla is now under 24/7 monitoring in intensive care. We think she will do fine with her “dream team” of veterinary superstars, and we can’t wait to watch this little one grow up!
